Pent vs apex shed roof: which is better?

Pent vs Apex Shed Roof: Which Should You Build?
Short answer: A pent roof is easier and cheaper to build, sheds rain to one side and suits sheds against a fence or wall. An apex roof gives more central headroom and a classic look, and sheds water both ways, but needs accurate angled rafter cuts and usually a ridge. Beginners building their first shed usually do best with a pent roof.

Roof pitch and coverings

Felt and shingles typically need a minimum pitch stated by the manufacturer (often around 10–15° for shingles), while EPDM rubber can go much flatter. Check the covering’s instructions before you set the rafter angle.

Height rules matter

In England, outbuildings within 2 m of a boundary are generally limited to 2.5 m overall height under permitted development. A pent roof makes that easier to meet. Always check current rules via the Planning Portal or your local building department.

Our verdict

First shed, tight budget, near a fence: pent. Want a loft shelf, a workshop feel or a classic look: apex, built from a plan with the rafter template drawn out.

Common questions

Which shed roof is cheapest?

Usually a pent roof, because it uses fewer, simpler rafters and less covering.

Is an apex roof stronger?

Not inherently. Both are strong if rafters are sized and fixed correctly for the span and snow load.

What pitch is a pent shed roof?

Many are around 5–15°, depending on the covering’s minimum pitch.
