Pallet wood projects for beginners

Pallet Wood Projects for Beginners (and How to Use Pallets Safely)
Short answer: Check the pallet’s stamp first: “HT” means heat-treated and is the usual choice; avoid “MB” (methyl bromide) and any pallet that is stained, smells of chemicals or came from an unknown source. Good beginner projects include planters, a compost bin, a garden bench, a shoe rack, wall shelves, a herb wall and a coffee table.

Is pallet wood safe?

Pallets carry an IPPC stamp: HT means heat-treated; MB means fumigated with methyl bromide and is best avoided. Don’t use pallets with spills or unknown history, and avoid them for food-contact items. Wear gloves and a mask when sanding.

How to take a pallet apart

  1. Use a pry bar and a hammer, or a reciprocating saw to cut nails between boards and stringers.
  2. Work slowly from both ends of each board.
  3. Punch out remaining nails before cutting.
