DIY Workbench Plans for Beginners: What Makes a Good First Bench
Short answer: A good first workbench is heavy, rigid and at the right height: roughly where your wrist meets the bench when your arms hang down (often 85–95 cm). A simple 2×4 frame with a doubled 18 mm plywood or MDF top, a lower shelf, diagonal bracing and a vice on the front left corner (for right-handers) handles almost every beginner project.

Choose the right size

Common sizes are 120–180 cm long and 60–75 cm deep. In a small shop, a shorter bench on locking casters can double as an outfeed table.

Build sequence

  1. Cut legs and rails from 2×4 (or 2×6 for the top frame).
  2. Assemble two leg frames, glue and screw, check square.
  3. Join with long rails; add a lower shelf frame for rigidity.
  4. Add diagonal braces if it racks.
  5. Fix a doubled sheet top, overhanging 5–10 cm for clamping.
  6. Fit a vice and drill a few dog holes.

Common questions

What height should a workbench be?

Roughly your wrist height with arms hanging, often 85–95 cm; lower for hand-planing, higher for detail work.

What wood is best for a workbench top?

Doubled 18 mm plywood or MDF is cheap, flat and heavy; a solid hardwood top is a later upgrade.

How do I stop a workbench wobbling?

Add a lower shelf, diagonal bracing and weight; level the legs on uneven floors.
