How to build a simple garden bench

How to Build a Simple Garden Bench (Beginner Project)
Short answer: A simple garden bench needs a seat height of about 43–46 cm, a depth of 35–45 cm and a length of 120–150 cm. Build two leg frames from 4×4 or doubled 2×4 timber, join with rails, fix seat slats with small gaps for drainage, add a brace under the middle of long benches, and finish with exterior oil or paint.

Make it last

Keep legs off soil on pavers, use stainless or coated screws, and re-oil annually.

Beyond the basic bench

Add a backrest, armrests or a storage box seat once you’re comfortable. Plans with angles drawn out make backrests much easier.

Common questions

What wood is best for a garden bench?

Pressure-treated softwood is cheap; cedar, larch and oak last longer naturally.

How long does it take to build a garden bench?

A simple bench is a one-day project for a beginner.

Do I need to treat a garden bench?

Yes, unless it’s a naturally durable species; oil or paint protects against rot and splitting.
