Is it cheaper to build a shed or buy one?

Is It Cheaper to Build a Shed or Buy One?
Short answer: Building usually costs less than buying a shed of the same quality, because flat-pack sheds often use thin cladding and light framing. The saving narrows or disappears if you must buy tools, pay for delivery of many small orders, or value your time highly. For small sheds under about 6×4 ft, buying is often simpler.

How to keep a self-build cheap

  1. Pick a size that matches standard 8 ft sheets.
  2. Get a full cut list and price it at two merchants.
  3. Use a pent roof.
  4. Buy treated timber only where it touches ground or weather.

Our take

If you already own basic tools and want a solid shed, building wins. If you need a tiny store shed fast, buy. See the 8×10 materials list to price a build.

Common questions

How much cheaper is building a shed?

It depends on prices and spec; the saving comes mostly from getting thicker timber for the same money.

Do I need special tools to build a shed?

A circular saw, drill-driver, level, square and tape measure cover most builds.

Do flat-pack sheds last?

They can, with a good base and regular treatment, but thin cladding tends to warp sooner.
